Recap: King David

King David, a man after God’s own heart.

A man that knew and loved God, and had followed God’s commands since he was a boy.

This man would be anointed by God to be the shepherd and king over Israel, a great task and a great calling.

In 1 Samuel 16, God calls David to be a shepherd over all of Israel, something David had been doing faithfully since he was 12 years old.

David knew God was with him, but more importantly he knew of God’s faithfulness, because David proved to be faithful in his role as a shepherd. Here, we can apply God’s calling in our own lives, whether it’s our role in school, a position at work, or where we are in life socially and economically. If we are faithful in the little things, God is capable of doing BIG things with our lives because of our obedience to him.

As the King of Israel, David conquers great feats such as the driving out of the Jebusites in 2 Samuel 5. This first task as king was monumental, especially because David heard God’s voice in the command of doing so. He left his comfort zone in Hebron, and returned to Jerusalem to take care of God’s business by driving the Jebusites out. In 2 Samuel 5:12 it says, “So David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted His kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.” What an amazing feeling to know God has placed you where you are in life because of HIS WILL, and to experience utter peacefulness because of God’s intentional will for our lives.

But what about those times in our lives when we question what’s happening around us? Are we in God’s perfect place? Is our state intentional when horrible things happen?

In 2 Samuel 5:17, David did not worry because of the Philistines headed for Israel. Instead of completely freaking out, David STOPPED and INQUIRED of the Lord. How often do we stop and inquire of the Lord’s will over a situation? When things start to get crazy in our lives, we should ask God, “How do you want me to handle this situation?” In this, we see that David wanted to make sure God was leading him.

In 2 Samuel 7, we see that David wants to build a house for the ark of the covenant, but instead God says no. God promises to make David’s house to be known forever by Jesus’ lineage stemming from the house of David. In this, David praises God for his love for him, and we see that out of David’s faithfulness God turns that obedience into a blessing.

However, in 2 Samuel 11, we become aware of how sinful David was capable of being. In this season of laziness, David sins against God by being involved in lust, sexual sin, and even murder. All of which could have been avoided if David was in tune with God’s will and calling for his life. This moment of weakness can be traced to David’s act of laziness and Satan using that against him for evil to occur. In all things, we should recognize the sanctity of God moments that occur all the time. Any moment can be a God moment, in which case God is willing to meet us. Everything we do is on “mission” no matter what we are called into.

Know this today, that much like David we too should treat life as one huge sacred calling. God wants to use you…yes, you. God wants you to be faithful in the ‘little’ things, which could actually be ‘big’ things. And lastly, continually ask God what your place in life is because every moment could be a “God moment”.
